

He was described as usually wearing dark clothing with distinctive shoes known as ‘Wing Walkers’ (military jump boots) established as being size 10.5 after shoe marks were found at the Lake Berryessa crime scene. Survivors’ and witnesses’ accounts (though few) described the Zodiac Killer as generally being of height 5’8” - 5’10” with curly brown/light red-brown hair in a crew cut. The only publicly named suspect was Arthur Leigh Allen. In the quest to solve the identity of the Zodiac Killer, many suspects have been considered over the years. The last cipher, sent in June 1970 and known as the Z32 cipher, was meant to lead to the location of the Zodiac’s bomb but has never been decoded. The third cipher, sent in April 1970, had 13 symbols (known as Z13) and was alleged to contain the Zodiac’s name, but has never been solved. The second, known as the Z340 cipher, was only recently decoded in 2020.

The first was sent in three parts to make up the Z408 cipher. A total of four ciphers were produced, sent between 19. He is well known for creating ciphers (a series of symbols) that were sent with his numerous letters. The Zodiac’s signature included sending letters to law enforcement and newspapers which would contain information only the perpetrator of the relevant murders would know, along with evidence from the crime. The killer himself claimed to have killed 37 people. There are 5 murders officially associated with the Zodiac Killer along with 2 attempted murders. The Zodiac Killer (or the Zodiac) is a pseudonym for the highly infamous serial killer active in Northern California in the late 1960s who has never officially been caught to this day.
